Smart Metering and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI)

A metering programme is judged on one number: the percentage of meters that returned a read on billing day.

Everything else follows from it. Losses cannot be located, feeders cannot be balanced and prepaid cannot be offered if a share of the meters went dark last month. Read success is a communication design problem, and on an AMI rollout it is settled feeder by feeder before a single meter is ordered.

Where SECCOM stops. Tariff, billing and revenue decisions stay with the utility and its regulator.
